Breath
The process of breathing is the most accurate metaphor we have for the way that we approach life, how we live our lives, and how we react to the inevitable changes that life brings us ... Breathing is the most accessible source you have for creating and sustaining your vital energy.
Donna Farhi in The Breathing Book
In yoga we purposefully bring our attention to the breath. This action invites our awareness to take up residence in the body. By following the breath making its journey into and out of the body, we are acknowledging that this, just being with ourselves is a valuable occupation. By bringing a mindful attention to our breath we create an opportunity to offer ourselves the gift of self love, and so begin a journey of nurturing the body, mind and spirit, and exploring a deeper sense of self.
Yoga teaches that prana, the life force, is within the breath. I like to think of this as an intimate connection with the sacred within my life, and in my breath. By bringing a dignified awareness to the breath, and to the body in which the breath is moving Yoga invites us to create a sacred space in which to develop a healthier lifestyle, and so to discover the stillness we seek is already within us.
Yoga teaches that the state of mind has profound effects on the body, and that the state of the body has profound effects on the mind. Some of the Yogic breathing practices I teach help to deepen the breath, this leads to the mind becoming calmer. Yoga invites us to practice breathing techniques that address the stresses in our lives. I teach breathing techniques to bring energy and clarity to the body and mind, and other techniques to quieten a restless mind and body, and breath work to purify the body and mind.
Working with the breath helps to develop concentration and focus, and so prepare for meditation.
